Why does gold have value? It is a representation of the Sun and as such it is part of magical ritual and is of value to the priesthood and the ruling class. If we have bad times and I have food and you don't I won't give you food for gold. Gold is not the answer for currency for that very reason. The remnant of the Sun cult will seek to control it.
